Tell them you have an appointment with Dr. Wilson.
Hidden on the second floor of the hotel, behind a sign that innocently reads "Dr. Wilson's Office", lies the heart of the Crown Jewel of Brazos Valley--Hamer's Speakeasy. As a matter of trivia, Dr. Wilson was the first optometrist in Navasota and his office sign was discovered in the rafters of the building that now houses the Red Board Tavern and Table. In classic Prohibitionist Era form, that sign provides the outward appearance of "legitimacy", while shielding that which would have been outlawed in the 1920s.
Hamer's Speakeasy is styled and named after the legendary Texas Ranger, Frank Hamer. Hamer gained the national spotlight for building and leading the posse responsible for the demise of Bonnie & Clyde Barrow on May 23, 1934. The lounge area offers classic Prohibitionist Era subdued light, subdued music, leather and classic chairs, and a wonderfully relaxing atmosphere. Frank Hamer is still regarded as the greatest lawman of the 20th Century, and you can absorb that history while sipping on a fabulous craft cocktail. How you find your way there, be it by catwalk, the hidden stairway, the antique lift, or the third floor penthouse entrance is up to you. But, you do not want to miss Hamer's.
If anyone asks what you are looking for. Just tell them you have an appointment with Dr. Wilson. Classic whiskeys, smoked old fashions, great wines, and an array of other beers and classic cocktails are available in Hamer's. Accent your drink with culinary bites. Its an experience that is so charming, Frank Hamer likely would have viewed it as illegal.
